Organizations and Associations
- Alliance for Commercialization of Canadian Technology (ACCT)
ACCT is a national “network of networks” that represents the four regional networks in Canada: ARCN, Les BLEUs, OnSETT and Westlink. ACCT will support the growth of all regional networks at varying stages of development and provide a structure for sharing best practices, pooling resources, achieving a critical mass of funding, encouraging relationship-building with industry and disseminating consistent knowledge across the country. - Association of University Technology Managers, Inc. (AUTM)
AUTM is a non-profit association comprised of over 2000 professionals who obtain and manage intellectual property from university research and other research-based institutions. Stay tuned to AUTM’s range of conferences, courses and events listed on their web site.
- Canadian Advanced Technology Association (CATA)
CATA Alliance is Canada’s national technology trade association providing business services to more than 1,000 “new economy” business members.
- Canadian Innovation Centre (CIC)
CIC is dedicated to assisting inventors and innovative companies. Their range of services includes invention evaluation, technology due diligence, market research and education programs.
- Canadian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI)
This catalogue service of Canada’s National Research Council provides extensive resources on science, technology, engineering and medicine.
- Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVCA)
Advocates for facilitating an effective VC community in Canada, promoting use of VC’s for SME’s and providing a forum for professional development, networking and communication among those involved in venture capital investment in Canada.
- Discovery Parks Incorporated (DPI)
DPI develops profitable real estate and infrastructure (incubator facilities) for technology businesses, particularly to developments in close proximity to post-secondary institutions.
- ArrowCan Partners
“Straight Talk On-Target Solutions” - Works with industry to determine early technology pipeline needs and works with universities to provide no-cost consulting services. Connects clients with the appropriate researcher through the right channels to facilitate and accelerate deal closures.

- Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA)
Federal branch that deals with tax, trade and border legislation through education, service and enforcement.
- Industry Canada
Canada's federal department that fosters the growth of a competitive, knowledge-based Canadian economy.
- Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR)
A major federal agency responsible for funding biomedical health research in Canada.
- National Research Council Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP)
Working in partnership with innovative companies, universities and research organizations worldwide, NRC IRAP is a leader in scientific and technical research, the diffusion of technology and the dissemination of scientific and technical information.
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
A Federal funding body that investments in people, discovery and innovation in Canada. NSERC will invest $538 million in university-based research and training in all the natural sciences and engineering. NSERC has also provided WestLink start-up program funding.
- Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Program
A joint program of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Industry Canada. The four NCE programs bring together partners from the academic, industry, public and non-profit sectors to conduct leading edge research and knowledge transfer activities in areas of strategic growth and opportunity for Canada.
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
SSHRC is the federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the humanities and social sciences.
- Western Economic Diversification (WD)
WD works to improve the long-term economic competitiveness of the west and the quality of life of its citizens by supporting a wide range of initiatives targeting three inter-related strategic outcomes: innovation, business development and entrepreneurship and community economic development.

- Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)
Includes the Canadian Bibliographic Searchable Database of Canadian patents, patent applications since 1989 and their new Canadian Trade-marks database.
- Source Translation Optimization's (STO) “Bust Patents”
They also publish the Internet Patent News Service, a mostly daily email news service covering patent, technology and economic issues.
- US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
This database covers information from January 1976 to the most recent weekly issue date.
- IBM Intellectual Property Network
A comprehensive, free, US Patent Search Service from IBM.
- MicroPatent
The “leader in the production and distribution of patent and trademark information.” Searchable databases include the 'Patent Web' and ‘Trademark Web.’
- PATSCAN
A patent search service located at the University of British Columbia and supported by the BC Ministry of Employment and Investment. Features links to a variety of patent search services.
- United Kingdom Patent Office
A searchable site for U.K. patents and trademarks.
- World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
One of the 16 specialized agencies of the United Nations system of organizations, WIPO is responsible for promoting the protection of intellectual property throughout the world. WIPO's Worldwide Directory of Innovation Centers and Services can be found at http://www.wipo.int/innovation
